For the past week or so, I’ve been going through a major detox. My body is in shock and my mind is trying to not drown with it.
I’ve gone from a sugar and carb-based diet to a gluten free vegan diet. I was raised on sugar and processed foods, and never fully came out of that habit. It’s an addiction, believe it or not. At a neurobiological level, the reward center of the brain is activated just like that of other addictions. Sugar has actually been shown to stimulate activity in the brain’s reward center more so than cocaine. However, it is difficult to further research and compare the two.
I can use that as my excuse, right?
Lets go over the grueling process of suddenly switching diets. Like with any addiction, if you suddenly cease to provide your body with what it needs or craves, your body can go into withdrawal. The withdrawal that I’ve dealt with isn’t as extreme as what people usually visualize when they hear the word “withdrawal“. Mainly, I am so tired all the time. I can just sleep and sleep and sleep. Migraines are a daily thing from the time I wake up until the time I go to sleep, regardless of how many Excedrin Migraine pills I take. I have no energy and my body aches. The level of irritation that I can get to so easily freaks me out and my emotions are all out of wack. For example, I’ve seen every episode of The Office so many times, but while I was watching the episode where Jim tells Pam how he really feels about her, I started bawling my eyes out.
Really?!?!
I haven’t really updated my blog in a couple of days because of the lack of energy which also effects my thinking. Sometimes it will take me forever to remember what I was trying to convey in a sentence that I was in the middle of writing.
The time it takes for my body to go through this detox will vary. It’s been a week so far and I’m hoping it will end soon, at least by the end of week 2. On another note, I’ve lost 5 pounds already hahaha!
I don’t recommend doing this switch suddenly. I did only because I found out how bad my cholesterol was (heart disease also runs in my family pretty heavily) plus the issues I already had with my stomach. I was already vegetarian and gluten free with a high-alkaline based diet before I went to the doctor. Lol, I feel bad for the next man that comes into my life!
